Consultation Rooms

Our consultation room is the first stop for any animal coming to the clinic. Here a pet is examined and assessed. Minor treatments can be administered here after which pets can be sent home. For more severe treatments pets are admitted to our hospital.

Hospital

Our hospital facility is where pets receive full day and overnight treatment until they are ready to be discharged. Animals that have undergone surgery also receive post surgery treatment.

Theatre

Our theatre facility is equipped with an operating theatre, orthopedic tools for orthopedic surgeries and a x-ray room. We encourage every owner to have their pet sterilised (it is our policy to only treat animals if owners commit to sterilise)

Mass Sterilisation Programme

Sterilisation is of utmost importance. The increasing population means insufficient homes or overcrowded homes which can lead to intentional and unintentional neglect and we constantly strive to increase the number of pets we sterilise. This is done through our main clinic and satellite sterilisation clinic. Every animal that comes for treatment is sterilised. In the case of puppies, treatment is given if the mom is sterilised.

Mobile Clinics

These are an extension of our on-site consultation room and enable people to get help for their pets when they are too far away from the clinic to bring their pets themselves. Pets are vaccinated, dewormed and receive flea and tick treatment as a standard procedure. Animals that need further assistance are transported to the clinic and admitted to our hospital. They are returned to owners when they are better.

Animal Ambulance

When emergencies are reported our ambulance will fetch a pet from their home or place where the accident occurred. They are taken to Mdzananda where they are admitted for treatment. The ambulance also serves as a pick up and drop off for community members who do not have transport to get their pets to us for help.

Small NPO Referral Clinic

Many small animal welfare organisations cannot afford private veterinary rates. We have partnered with several smaller organisations who bring a set number of pets to us per month to receive treatment at a lower cost. We believe in working together as we are all working towards the greater good of the animals.

Pet Shelter

Our small shelter facility takes in stray and abandoned animals. We nurse sick pets back to health, rehabilitate abused pets and give home to unwanted or stray pets until we can re-home them safely. Each pet in our shelter facility is sterilised and treated for any illnesses as required. We can house 40 dogs and 20 cats at a time. We also make use of a foster home system when our shelter facility is full. We partner with Luna Cat Rescue who finds forever and foster homes for our cats.

Vet Shop

An on-site vet shop sells everything that a pet would need at low prices which are affordable to the community. Items include good food, leads, collars, jackets, blankets, toys, treats, kennels and shampoo to name a few.

Inspectorate

Mdzananda has three animal welfare inspectors who fight against cruelty in the community. Our first approach is always education as a lot of neglect is often due to a lack of understanding. In cases of deliberate cruelty prosecution will follow.

Education Programmes

Door-to-Door Mobiles

Our education mobile goes door-to-door to peoples’ homes. At each visit we discuss essential information including vaccinations, dewormers, sterilisation, feeding, exercise and more.

The pet and household are assessed, and advice is given to improve the pet’s health or living conditions where needed.

On-Site Education

Each pet owner who visits Mdzananda receives individualised information based on their pet, its specific requirements as well as general information on primary health care, behavioural issues and more.

School Education

Mdzananda delivers workshops to a number of schools in the community. We have presented at school holiday clubs in partnership with the Department of Social Development as well as at grass-root community groups. During school holidays children spend their time volunteering, bathing and grooming dogs, cleaning kennels etc. We host animal education classes in the local schools’ life skills classes on a regular basis.

Pet Therapy

At Mdzananda we like to share love.

We partner with old age homes, hospitals or related companies and organisations where people need some extra love. Our homeless dogs visit these organisations for a couple of hours. This gives the humans some much needed love and the homeless dogs some affection too.
